Admittedly, I don't know much about the period (most of my high school WWII history involved Hitler, Stalin, and the parts that did involve Japan were basically, 'they bombed Pearl Harbor...Hiroshima and Nagasaki got bombed...the end'), but apparently Leyte was the last battle that the IJN made it out in force, and it seems to have been a crucial battle in the Pacific Theatre.

Couple of questions:
1) Can the Japanese do better?
1.1) How?
2) Can the Americans do worse?
2.1) How?
3) What might the effects be of a Japanese victory? Or at least a stalemate?
(note: questions 1 and 2 are posed in the OTL (for instance, Japan does better than the Americans who still act as OTL, and Americas does worse with Japan still acting the same))
