well dependng on his politics it's one of the three

1) He becomes a redeemer and #2 figure in the lost cause movement, he might end up becoming governor of Virginia, or maybe a senator/congressman after the reconstruction until he dies/retires.

2) He runs afoul of Jubal Early and the Southern Historical Society and is tore down in the process of dietifying Robert E Lee. His absence on the first two days of Gettysburg is blamed for the defeat. He ends up being a hated name in the south, like Longstreet.

3) He becomes rather obscure, like Joe Johnson or Richard Ewell. But his proximity to Lee and his survival would have made him probably the most famous surviving officer in the Army of Northern Virginia. And probably the ex-CS officer with the best reputation in the entire south. He's probably going to get caught up in the lost cause at one point or another.

He'll be a lost causer, after Jeb's father died Lee helped Jeb's family raise him and he was a father figure to Jeb. He would be among the first to worship at the alter of RE Lee.
