WI: Iraq gasses Tehran, major Iranian cities

Georges Sada is known to be a less than reliable writer, he once claimed that Saddam had sent his WMD to Syria before the war. And at best he says in it that there were detailed plans which called for use of chemical weapons against Israel...............so what? Pretty much every military has attack plans for every concivable senario, in some file at HQ, that does not mean they are about to implement it. The US doubtless has detailed plans to invade Bangladesh right now, but not likely they are close to implementing it.

I recall at this time Iraq was on the offensive and had support of America, the USSR, and a lot of other powers.

I'd think the US would look the other way.
Using gas attacks when you are invading another country would be... Perhaps a little problematic. While people might forgive defenders from using it might be forgiven to an extent, though people will be asking why they had those weapons to start with. For Iraq to invading their neighbor during a period of destability and gas them... Yah, that is going to be an even better way to unify monarchist, democrat, and Islamist against the invaders. I imagine this would also be used in Khuzestan against Iranian troops and strongholds, meaning that the Arabs of Iran would also suffer from the Iraqi attacks. And now Baghdad is fair game in the eyes of Iranians to be obliterated.

Perhaps then, it might actually be better if the US doesn't do anything directly besides official condemnations. The local players banding together and taking Saddam down together themselves, might do some lasting good. Instead of them going right back to squabbling afterwards should the U.S. do the job for them.

By 88 the war had turned back to the Iraqi's favor-no one-Soviet, American, Saudi, wanted to see Iranian style revolutions sweep the Middle East and so all the aforementioned provided at least some kind of support to Iraq.

This sort of attack I think would break the spirit of Iran.

Kill half a million civilians in a single go and see what happens once the little babies are all lined up in rows.
500,000 Iranian civilian deaths?

Did Iraq have a large enough stockpile of chemical weapons/missiles for that to be feasible?
