WI Iran attacked Iraq on the same day that the US/UK attacked it?

What happens if Iran invades Iraq at the same time as the US and UK? The Iranian air force carries out some air strikes to help the UK and US, and Iran tells the US and UK that they are on their side. After Iraq is militarly defeated, Iran plays for time, whilst secretly arming Iraqi resistance fighters and infiltrating them into the parts of Iraq that the US and UK have taken. At the same time Iran tries to develop the nuclear bomb as quickly as possible, knowing that once they have it, it is unlikely that the US and UK would risk invading it.

Can Iran hang on in there until it gets nuclear weapons, or do the US and UK lose paitence quickly and attack and/or invade it?

We would have noticed an Iranian buildup, and that would have totally changed the situation.

The question to ask - and I am honestly not being mean in saying this - is whether P, having drunk half a bottle of whiskey in five hours, would peer at one's thread and mumble-cum-slur "That doezhn't make any shensh." (As John says, it's quite an alteration and quite an obvious one.) If he does, then one should reconsider (reconshijjuh?) one's position prior to posting.

Hmmmmmm.... The US would seriously need to rethink its Iran policy as a result. Which way would be up to whoever is in charge...

Whiskey? I suspect you of over indulging in the fruit beer again.

The two advancing armies meet at the Euphrates, and to avoid an all out war it is agreed to divide Iraq into the Federal Republic of Iraq (West Iraq) with it's capital at Fallujah and the Islamic Republic of Iraq (East Iraq), likewise Baghdad is divided into West Baghdad and East Baghdad. The Iranians attempt to choke West Baghdad at birth with the Baghdad Blockade and the Baghdad Wall but to no avail as the MEATO alliance is formed!

If only that was siggable. :D

Actually, this does raise some interesting questions. If Iran, as part of Khatami's attempts to reestablish relations with the west, backs the coalition of the willing in Iraq (and presumably offers to help in Afghanistan), how do Bush et. al. respond?

That said, I don't see an all-out invasion as being likely, unless in conjunction with the coalition. especially if this is an independent action, more likely would be a limited incursion along the border, with objectives most likely being along the lines of securing the Shat-al-arab and holding a decent portion of Iraqi territory in the south (maybe occupying Basra, perhaps); possibly some mucking around in Kurdistan as well.

Khatami offered Iranian help both in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bush turned him down. Now we are stuck with Amored Dinner Jacket.

we generally don't invade our military partners.

(look at who else we went into Iraq with - have we invaded any of them? no)

The US and Allies would politely turn them down and advise they stay out. The last thing the US and the Arab nations want is Iran extending its influence and power in the region.
