Now, back to the Germany direct -strategy, how about another landing operation instead of Market Garden? Most obvious target is Antwerpen region, but could even an operation against Northern Germany or Denmark be anticipated?
AFAIK, the Allied problems were logistical, but yet there was a demonstrated capability of launching a three division + brigade airborne operation. Air transportation of another division (British 51 Lowland) was contemplated and US 17th Airborne could be flown in if necessary. Most of the landing craft were freed from operations. At the same time there was the famous problem of supplying advancing troops in France.
Was a continuation landing operation historically contemplated, or to be more exact, could it be made? Allied staffs had by now the positive experiences of many MTO landings and above all, the Overlord itself. Task Force 88, experienced in tactical support of land operations, could be swinged to North Sea to provide air support against the Luftwaffe. For the vast naval force experienced in naval gunfire support there seems to have been no urgent tasks.
In September the German forces seemed to be in shambles. Luftwaffe serviceable strength was close to June 1944 numbers but decline in pilot quality had been dramatic. Both her Eastern and Western fronts had been shattered. Kriegsmarine had practically lost the strength it had before D-Day in futile battles.
What would be the faults of this line of thought?
