WI: Independent Masovia

WI: Independent Mazovia

What if the Poland-Bohemia union in the end of the 13th century holds and survives longer, this would mean that Masovia is likely to be independent, what would happen to an independent Mazovia, would it be swallowed or vassalized by Lithuania or Russia or becomes a Prussia like state.

It depends on whether or not Masovia secures an elusive alliance with the inevitable Hohenstaufen-led Bruneian superpower of TTL. On one hand, Plantagenet Russia might lunge for it, but on the other the Holy Romanian Empire of the Piasts might block their interests. Either way, though, Ming Hannover-Hungary is not going to let Masovia go economically independent of their Baltic-Caribbean trade monopoly.

Seriously, though, devoured without question.

That was so last year.:D

It is really hard to say. IOTL Masovia was a separate state(s) until XVIth century, despite being practically surrounded by Poland and Lithuania - but dukes of Masovia were Polish vassals. I think they would try to keep it that way. Masovia on its own was a little too weak with too strong neighbours - they would need some protection. Poland would be the most attractive partner/protector - the shared, heritage, Teutonic Order as a common enemy, and Lithuania was pagan. Question is, would Polish-Bohemian king be interested? I think so. Masovia was not so rich, but also not so poor land, and its incorporation or at least vasalization would be quite attractive. Of course there are also dynastic questions to be considered - dukes of Masovia were Piasts after all, potential competition to Polish crown taken by Bohemian dynasty of Premyslid.

Why would they be independent? Mazovia was already Bohemian vassal briefly in 14th century.

Actually, duke Wenceslaus of Płock, was vassal of John of Bohemia from the Luxembourg dynasty (Premyslids died out in 1306) - but it doesn't matter: John also used the title of the King of Poland and in cooperation with the Teutonic Order he was quite close to become ruler of Poland for real - Polish prince Władysław the Short (Piast dynasty) was saved by Hungarian support. So, if Premyslid line goes on and keeps Poland or Luxembourg rulers conquer Poland, they would also keep Masovia as their vassal.
BTW, Premyslid claims to Polish crown were based on the last will of Henry Probus, the right of conquest and marriage between Wenceslaus II and Elizabeth Richeza (daughter of Przemysl II). Although pope Bonifacius VIII refused to accept Wenceslaus II as the king of Poland.
