WI: In the 17th century Indian merchants round Africa and sail to Europe

That would be interesting in itself, but I doubt it would go far.

The vessels would need to "refuel" on the way, and most trading stations are in direct control of the European powers. Then, once they're there, the markets would be closed as a lot of that control is, as you pointed out, under state monopoly. Even the big merchants would have stakes in the companies.

On top of that, there's the question of motivation: the bulk of the revenues does not come from the Indies-Europe trade but from the Indies to Indies trade

The trade was worthwhile for Europeans because the Indies had products simply unavailable in Europe (such as spices). Was there ANYTHING in Europe that would make it worth an Indian merchant's time and capital to make the trip? Even aside from the other cogent points given above.

Well, same thing they paid with: silver and gold. ALthough yeah, mostly coming from Manilla.

Although, wines and furs? Maybe? I'm sure European spirits could have some interest in the Indian Ocean, although if they saw it, the Companies would start selling them too...
