Try 'The Panic of 79' by Paul Erdman. Published in 1976, it has a nuclear armed Shah playing off the superpowers (and western nations) against each other in an attempt to conquer the gulf nations. It all ends in nukes.

"heart" in boxing refers mostly to physical endurance, but it goes a bit beyond that. The ability to come out round after exhausting round and keep punching away. So - physical endurance and fighting spirit.

I think that at the least, we'd need a very different Shah for a very different Iran.

I got around to reading that a few months ago. It's an interesting book, but I would have liked to see more about the economic aftermath. It's really more about the buildup to the crisis.

Making things more interesting, by the early 1980s Imperial Iran would have the two nuclear reactors at Bushehr completed. It might even acquire enrichment capabilities later in the decade, as the United States felt more comfortable with Iran working as part of Eurodif at the time. If the nuclear enrichment ban in the United States is lifted, a facility sale to Imperial Iran and a few new nuclear power plants could help to revive the American nuclear industry.

My assertion was that if the Shah did not begin to win his people over, some sort of revolt would have happened. The educated western leaning people actually had alot to do with the revolt, but were then superseded by the Islamicists.

This is true. The revolt against the Shah didn't happened because the Islamists revolted, but because a majority of Iranians simply had had enough of the Shah's shenanigans. The Islamists won the power struggle and emerged the victorious faction among the revolters.

So, basically the butterfly away the revolution, you basically need the Iranians to have a much better opinion of the Shah.
