WI: Imperial Brazil post 1889

POD: the Oilgarches for whom the abolition of slavery was the Last Straw slip up, and the Princess Imperial (de-facto Regent) Isabel Leopoldina manages to rally a coalition of commoners, freedmen, and enough of the military (Deodoro da Fonseca is talked into siding with the Imperialists) to put them down. There is considerable land redistribution, a large number of exiles, and extensive reform of the Legislature/Franchise. as well as provencial administration. By the time the more gradualist Emperor Pedro II returned the 'damage', as it were, was done.

Now what?

You mean, Isabel do it while the Emperor isn't in the country? I can't see she doing all this (free the slaves was already a daring step) and if she tries, I doubt she would have many supporters. The conservatives didn't like her because she was too liberal for them. And the liberals considered her too conservative (at least in religious matters). And absolutely nobody liked her husband, Conde D'Eu. It could even be seen as a coup by some of the monarchists.
After the Abolition the monarchy was almost completely doomed, because it wasn't useful for nobody anymore, except for the Imperial family. The only way I can see the monarchy surviving with a POD after the Abolition is if you get rid of Isabel. Maybe if she dies in the early November 1889 the Army would not try the coup, because of the official mourning. They delay it some months. In the beggining of 1890 the Parliament should vote many reforms, and maybe, if you give time enough, the reforms are approved, and some moderate republicans start to think that this new monarchy could be good. With the Prince Pedro de Alcantara you would have a male heir, more accepted by the conservatives. But even all of this it's kind of unlikely now. The monarchy fall without anyone rebelling against it, and I someone do it, as the majority of the Army was already republican, it would probably fail.
