WI: If Samsung bought Fokker..

Mother fokker !

More seriously, by buying Fokker, South Korea could have a hold on Airbus A320 / Boeing 737, something Bombardier currently tries to achieve with their C-series (China is also trying hard).

Samsung wasn't that hard-hit OTL, so maybe they pull a miracle and survive with Fokker. But most likely Fokker wouldn't be kept to survive, just its experience and technology exploited as much as possible before Samsung makes their own, fully Korean aerospace company.

the 100-passenger class of airliner has been the grave of too many aerospace companies over the last two decades. At first glance it looks like a good idea "maybe we could start eating into Boeing and Airbus market by designing a 100 - 140 passenger airliner that could compete with their A320 and 737". It is actually a very bad idea, as Bombardier is learning the hard way with their C-series... I remember twenty years ago, how Avro and Fokker went into bankruptcy.

How's Embraer doing?

the article has very interesting information

Hyundai, Hanjin and Daewoo -- have notified the South Korean Government that they will not join Samsung Aerospace Industries Ltd.

That became Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. in 1999
mostly they make Licensed production or aircraft Upgrade and Modification.
With Fokker on other hand they would have access how-know and production site in Europe
not only in civilian but also in Military and Spaceflight hardware, Fokker was building

One thing the Samsung Aerospace Industries Ltd. could have build was the Fokker 130
A stretched model of the Fokker 100 with 130 seats and more power full engines the burn 50 % less fuel as Fokker 100 !

Also Fokker work for Lockheed Martin, Airbus, Boeing and Bombardier in part production like landing gear or electrical systems for aircraft
the Same goes for important parts of European spacecraft and parts of Ariane rocket.

But the Biggest treasure Samsung will find in Fokker it's in his archive !
Fokker made allot of Join-venture project
one is 1960 Republic-Fokker D-24 a advance Mach 2 VTOL reconnaissance/bomber/combat plane

With purchase of Fokker to Samsung Aerospace Industries Ltd. and later into Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd.
South Korea aerospace would have his foot in US and EU market in 2000s

But it did kill their attempt at an auto business.

Is the CSeries really failing that bad?

IIRC they had to take something like US $3 billion write-down, get Canadian $1 billion from the Quebec provincial government, and ask for another half a billion in government aid from the federal government. They have made some sales now but there are questions over whether they'll actually make any money on them or if they had to sell at cost, or perhaps even take a loss, to get the first few deals.
