WI Hyderabad had remained independent?

In 1948 India initiated a "police action" called Operation Polo to insure that Hyderabad was brought into the Indian Union.

Hyderabad had attempted to stay independent as a Dominion in the Commonwealth or as simply an independent state.

So, what if they had managed to do so? What effects could this have?

I'm not sure about effects, but I'm sure that cause of Hyderabad's independence have to be outside of the nizamat itself. I mean, either Indian leadership should be comfortable with idea of pricely states or Britons have to go out of their way to ensure that Hyderabad's independence is protected (I'm not sure what could cause such decision of theirs).

It's really hard for me to see this as viable; the Congress had a wide base of support in Hyderabad, and any attempt to saty outside of India would result in a hostile neighbor. What's Britain's interest in propping them up?

I dont see this working in the long term. There was support for the Indian nationalist movement inside the princly state, and Congress is almost certainly going to move to incorporate hyderabad if and when it has the opportunity. So the only way to make this a viable option would be to have the Nizam's rule be backed by other powers (i.e. the UK), or to have congress-led india neutered in such a way that it is unable to take over (probably by fragmenting india).
