WI: HW Bush picked Jack Kemp as his running mate in 1988

What if HW picked Kemp as his running mate instead of Quayle? How would Kemp perform in the debate against Bentson? Would HW gain or loose any states?

Kemp would probably perform better than Quayle did, especially when people talk about experience credentials. Needless to say, it would make the entire "You're no Jack Kennedy" debacle disappear, leaving one of the most badass political comebacks in modern US history un-needed, much to my chagrin. Either way, Kemp would give GHWB more credit among the Reagan conservatives and he may actually play a role in making the "No New Taxes" pledge go unviolated, due to Kemp's role in cutting taxes a decade earlier. He may not have that large of an immediate effect in 1988, but he could make a monumental difference in 1992 and beyond.

Also, sorry for posting again, but it will probably make him a strong candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and he could use his post to further motivate the Bills, maybe even enough that they would win one of their four Super Bowl appearances.

Probably sets Kemp up nicely for 1996 or 2000 if he still wants to be President. I don't think a different VP gives Bush another term though. I agree with @Calcaterra that it gives Bush more credibility among movement Conservative types than Quayle did.

Another thing to consider is what becomes of Dan Quayle? Does he get re elected to the Senate in 1992? If he does how long does he stay there?

Quayle could run for the nomination in 1996 or 2000. Without his public gaffes and large prominence, he could continue as a quietly rising star in the GOP, and become a standard-bearer for the family values wing of the party, a position that would afford him uncontroversial notability among the conservative and evangelical bases. Who knows, he may even become Senate Majority Leader if a few things change.

Perhaps Bush wins New York in 1988. But I don't think it impacts 41's Presidency. I think the 1996 nominee will still be Dole. But he'd likely have a different running mate. Nonetheless he still loses to Clinton.
