WI: Hurricane Erin changes course

17 years ago on 9/11 there was a hurricane called Erin off the coast of New York City. What happens if it changed its course heading toward NYC?

Not sure if weather changes constitute ASB, but if not, and how rough Sandy was...uhh, shit. 9/11 was bad enough when the weather was perfect. Add in a hurricane and it bogs down the relief effort even more, and the initial oh-holy-fuck expected death toll of 6,000 becomes a conservative estimate. And factor in evacuating 8 million people who already went through a pants-shitting event already and you just don’t want to be NYC OR the surrounding areas. Or whatever city ends up taking in a bunch of evacuees.

At the very least, NYC isn’t as vulnerable to flooding as New Orleans - I don’t know a city that is. But so many things are tied to NYC, especially finance. Where does the NYSE go if it can’t work out of NYC? And as far as presidential responses go, if Dubya’s response to Erin is anything like Katrina, any goodwill he has from charging into Afghanistan is going to be tempered by the biggest city in the country being a disaster. Iraq may get a lot more opposition, especially if it’s seen as a distraction and if people get a lot more concerned about what’s going on in New York. Factor in a bigger hit to the economy and a lot of moves by Bush generating a lot more blowback and Bush is probably a one-term President while someone on the left who is a bit more fiery gets the win. Maybe Howard Dean if he can avoid being seen as a shrieking moron.
