WI: Hunter S Thompson and Freak Powers get into office.

In 1970 Joe Edwards, Hunter S Thompson, and other non-conformists "Freaks" Ran for office in Aspen Colorado. None of them one...but what if they did? Joe Edwards only lost by six votes, many believe the election was fixed. Thompson himself came pretty danm close. If a few hippie's and bikers could get into office, could they make a difference?

Pardon the bump, but Thompson probably would have tried to get higher. Losing this election made him give up running for office. This butterflies away Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as well as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72, which is big.

He still got 44% of the vote, didn't he?

That's still 7 points behind a majority. And the Republican candidate dropped out of the race so that the anti-Thompson forces could win with the Democrat in that race (in return, the Democrats agreed to remove their candidate for county commissioner).

Thompson freaked out the establishment, and the establishment rallied and mobilized better than Thompson's supporters.

That mostly had to do with the Rolling Stone piece that jolted the establishment, no? It wouldn't be too hard to pull the plug on that one, they jilted him during the fall of Saigon for crying out loud.
