WI Hitler

What if Hitler had realized he was going to lose earlier in the war and hadn't killed himself, but instead had escaped from Berlin/Germany?

The Nazi party had numerous plans for Hitler to leave Berlin, and I believe he had a good chance of getting away. If I remeber correctly there was always a plane ready to take off if Hitler felt like it.

What leaving would do depends on when Hitler decides to flee. If it is in the final hours he may be free for a few days after Berlin is taken but he would quickly become the most wanted person on earth. I doubt any one who helped Nazi's flee europe would do the same with Hitler for helping him may end in military actions.

If he decides to leave a week or two earlier then the war ended OTL Hitler could have gotten some real distance between himself and the Allies. Maybe shave the mustache, and comb his hair while he empties the accounts in Switzerland. Then it is a trip to Spain and a ship to South America.

Hitler would hide out with Eva and the other Nazi elite with the massive fortune they stole living the good life. Then in the fifties Adolf dies in a soft bed free from punishment, and even looked to as a hero for the way he stood up to Communism.

Yet if Hitler lasts into the 60's we may see Mossad agents kidnapping him so he can be put on trial. Personally that might be the most one sided trial in the history of the world.

Hitler was a dead man (if he was lucky). The NKVD would have never stopped looking for him, for that matter neither would the OSS or the Brits (remember where & why the whole "00" thing originated).

Stalin had some very special plans for Hitler if he was ever captured alive.

Not to mention the Mossad if/when they come around.

While I appreciate & agree with the sentiment, I think even Mossad would want to put him in the bag so he could go on trial, just to let people see what he's been reduced to, & to show "We're better than they were".

Perhaps this is what happened...

He did realize in late Spring 1945 that Germany was about to be defeated. This why he faked his own death (leaving a clone of himself in the Berlin bunker), and escaped to the secret Nazi base in New Swabia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Swabia

After this fact emerged, the US Navy sent Operation High Jump to the Antarctic in 1946-1947 to drive the nazis out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_High_Jump - but by this time they had already mostly escaped to the moon. Nevertheless the Nazi base was hit by perhaps a dozen atomic bombs - which in retrospect was a mistake, seeing as this action was unnecessary and resulted in the release of the frozen giant sea lizards (which of course remaining a maritime hazard to this day).

Out of sight, out of mind, and nobody worried about the lunar Nazi issue until the early 1960s. JFK was however shocked by these facts when he became President, and this why he announced the goal of reaching the moon within a decade. Of course once the Apollo program had been initiated, JFK also faked his own death (using the capturing Nazi cloning technology), and we now know, personally commanded the secret Apollo 18 mission to the lunar far-side, which of course finally eradicated the lunar Nazi menace.

(Sorry I couldn't resist, Hitler escaping to a secret base is of course an over-used staple of fiction)

He would be hunted for the rest of his life, and places that helped other Nazis on the run would not want to help him as it would get them into trouble.

with Hitler's health being what it was, I can't imagine him living much longer. I'd be really suprised to see him make to to 1950, even assuming he makes it to south America. (Which is where I presume he ends up.)

Hitler is now the most wanted man alive. My guess is, he dies in 1947*, due to ill health. Though I'd like to see Hitler's reaction to Israel.

*This may be too generous. He may not live past 1945

I do think that we will have "Hitler spottings" around Europe and south America well into the mid fifties. If not beyond.
