WI Hitler

Ok so this is an idea I had, what if Hitler had never been assigned to spy on the German Workers' Party, or had never been made a police spy, whichever would work better. I think that it would just be interesting to speculate if he would have eventually risen to power anyways, which I doubt but I could be wrong, or if someone else would rise to power instead, or maybe nothing would happen and the republic would last or fall apart in some other way. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought about this.

hmm just realized this was in the wrong forum... oh well my bad, sorry.

Same Hitler, surely? Same madness, same hatred, same burning desire for unlimited power? I imagine he could have built up a party of his own to the same footing the DAP when he joined (a complete joke, that is) in short order, or hitched with another tiny nationalist party. Why not just kill him in the war? Same butterflies, but guaranteed not to snap back to out history and being more nastily satisfying.

That of course doesn't guarantee his ascendancy. The are so many variables that its impossible to state with anything like the kind of accuracy you seem to want the consequences of this PoD. If you want a timeline in which Hitler never rises, look over a few that have already been written, read up on the Weimar era, and go for it! But this PoD really could lead to anything.

I think it is an interesting idea. Hitler would not have had the idea to become active in politics before being assigned to spy on the DAP. It was when he started attending meetings of this party that he had the idea to get a leadership position and build the party into something stronger, then he started thinking about becoming a national leader.

I think with or without Hitler there would have been some sort of strong right wing party in Germany (there were quite a few others that the Nazis more or less absorbed). Such a party would at least be virulently anti-Communist, but perhaps wouldn't be quite so anti-Semitic without Hitler. Also think about, for example, the homosexuality of Ernest Rohm and other figures in the SA--in an alternate history the "Nazi-party-equivalent" might not be so Homophobic.

But if Hitler exists and isn't killed in the first world war, I think it is a given that he is going to join this alternate right wing party sooner or later, and at least attempt to get a leadership position.
