WI: Hitler fought for Austro-Hungary?

The main question is whether he stays in Austria after the war or if he returns to Germany. If he stays in Austria then he will never be exposed to the Nazis, the Weimar Republic will be replaced by an authoritarian-right government and Hitler will never be remembered.

Hitler could still go to Germany but considering he only found the DAP because of his service in the army, the Nazi's won't ever come into existence.

Just wondering how radically would history have been changed if Hitler had fought in the Austro-Hungarian Army?

Most likely die. He fled to Germany pre-war to avoid the draft and if he were actually inducted, he'd probably die like most of the pre-war army in 1914-1915 when the AH army was almost wiped out to a man.

Yep, if fighting for Austria-Hungary either a rotting corpse or a prisoner of war somewhere in Russia. Chances of survival for frontline soldiers about zero.

So world with no Hitler.

Which of course changes things dramatically. Germany remains rightwing, but not explicitly antisemetic, so no brain drain. No world war (at least as we know it) and Schleicher finds some other, slower, safer ways to try and win back German parts of Europe. Germany recovers economically, but eventually finds a way out of the Versailles treaty without going to war. More stabile Europe with the boogeyman of the Soviets to force a reconciliation. That is if trends remain the same and someone (Stalin) doesn't gamble on war, or the rightwing in Germany let's Röhm have too much power, then Germany goes into civil war mode.

Would a revanchist Germany without Hitler be more likely to try to restore the monarchy?

No, the Hindenburg conspiracy ultimately failed because they could not present a monarch acceptable to the Germans - neither Big Willy nor Little Willy would do, both had lost all credit in the populace during the war.

Monarchy in Germany was brushed away in November 1918 as a side note to public unrests, nobody stood up to fight for these obsolete parasites, who had amply demonstrated their futility during the war.

I think we'd see a far more conventional Fascist movement. But the Weimar Republic might have alighting chance without the rabid instability caused by the Nazis.

But what if Hitler survived the war fighting for A-H then later funded a nazi like party with the golle to reunite A-H. We would have a second world war in wich a rump A-H fights against the allies. We could have an Anschluss to reunite Austria with Hungary then have Hitler take Transilvania back and atack Cehoslovakia for something.

Well it depends where Hitler ends up. He could end in either Germany, Austria or the Sudetenland. For the sake of the argument lets say he ends up in Austria. He will be at odds with the Austrofascist movement and will probably end up joining he Greater German Peoples Party aka the GDVP. With Hitlers charisma the GDVP could be a serious threat to the VF.

Requires a personality transplant as drastic as George H. Thomas, Confederate General or Robert E. Lee, Union General. Hitler's Pan-Germanism meant he was unlikely in the extreme to fight for the Habsburg Empire.

Really doesn't matter when he gets conscripted. Once he's in he could go AWOL,but....
