Didn't Hitlers 'no step back' order prevent the German Army in Russia from being run over in the winter of 41/42?
not par say. the fact was that Guderian and Kluge had built good static positions along the Oka river during the delays in the fall when 2nd panzer army went to Kiev. It was these positions which had been built up over many weeks which were able to be held. The forward positions from operation Typhoon could not be held because it was too cold to dig in hence those advances were abandoned. Also Zhukov attacked on too wide of a front and disapated his strength so the Germans were able to catch their breath.
