WI: Hitler assassinated 1942

What if Soviet spies killed Hitler in January of 1942. Does the war end sooner thanks to a leadership collapse, or later if a more level headed replacement took charge?

Sooner I expect.

Depends if the replacement is sane or not. I imagine the military leaders may take control and sue for peace with the West whilst trying to squeeze something out of the surrender terms.

Depends on who took over

Germany was still very strong in 1942 - the African campaign appeared to be going well, most of Europe was under their thumb. I suspect we would have seen a lot of in-fighting within the German power group and it's difficult to say who may have won.

However, if a reasonable leader emerged, then they may have been able to negotiate a peace with UK/US, etc possibly resulting in their being able to apply more forces in the east.

taking into account the alternate history novel FOX on the Rhein where Hitler is accinated in 1944 with a successfull Operation Staufenburg. In this we see Himmler briefly taking power, but put out of business by the Millitary. The German Army makes peace in the East and eventuelly Rommel and Patton meet and war ends. Could we seen something simular if Hitler had been killed in 1942??
