WI: Hiram Johnson elected President in 1920?

In the 1920 Republican National Convention the first few rounds were a three-way tie between Lieutenant General Leonard Wood, Republican Senator (and 1912 Roosevelt VP pick) Hiram Johnson, and Iowa Governor Frank Lowden. After much infighting between the three, a "smoke-filled room" of party bosses decided to put Senator Warren Harding into office, because he was fairly uncontroversial, and could didn't carry as much baggage as the others. The pick was, to be fair, horrible in hindsight

But what if Wood and Lowden either didn't run, or were convinced to drop out. What would Johnson's term be like? Would he run again? Would he fall to Tecumseh's Curse and die like Harding in real life? How would the Roaring 20's develop with him at the helm.

Well, Johnson's term would likely lead to a prolonged "progressive era" since he certainly falls under that wing of the Republican Party. We still probably get the anti-immigrant stuff, and Johnson apparently had a Kouple Klan Konnektions so maybe we see the uglier sides of early 20th century Progressivism.

We already did: Wilson was a "progressive," and look what he did. But I digress...
