WI: Hindenburg lives?

Hindenburg's death was pretty much perfectly timed for the Nazis and for Hitler's ambitions at creating a unitary structure with him at the undisputed head (the position of Führer). I know he was an old, old man and not in the best health, but stranger things have happened than people living to their mid-90s.

If he were to do so, and retain some degree of sanity (he appears to not have been a senile wreck when he died, he was just old in the body), what happens for the Nazis? Assume he lives until the next Presidential election, which would be in 1939.

So, what happens? Do the Nazis simply bump him off or talk him into retirement? If they don't, what does the continuing lifespan of a German national hero in the Presidency mean for the centralisation of power around Hitler?

It makes it more likely that when Hitler moves to take full control the army moves to stop him. The German Officers opposed to Hitler were reluctant to act against him as they along with the rest of the military sworn an oath of loyalty to him as leeder of the German State. By declairing himself Furher Hitler had in effect become Kaiser of the German Empire. Assasinating him would have been Regicide and according to the code of honour the pre Nazi military had been brought up in was unthinkable. With Hindinburg still President there would be no oath.

Even before he died Hindenburg was becoming a NAZI stooge, just look at the "Seizer of Power" I think if he lived a little bit longer he would only serve the NAZI's further and assist in the creation of Hitler's Third Reich.

An alternative could be for him to die earlier and estabish someone else as President before Hitler can consolidate power
