WI Hess has a "smart" crisis?

In OTL Hitler had appointed Rudolf Hess his deputy...
WI from that position Hess has a "smartness" crisis and starts plotting against Hitler and other high ranking Nazis?
What then?
(If u believe this post fits better in ASB section feel free to move it there...)

I think you mean "what if Rudolf Hess suddenly becomes highly intelligent.' I wouldn't say it was a 'smartness crisis'. Nothing wrong with being clever!

He'd get thrown into a political camp if he started plotting. Or summarily shot and dumped into the Spree.

If Hess really turns into a highly intelligent person, he might be able to off the Führer. Of course, if he was he'd realise he doesn't stand a chance of taking power and try to get in touch with those that can, which might put him either behind the abortive Göring coup in '39 or in bed with the first generation of Wehrmacht officers trying to blow up Hitler in '41. He could be pivotal in that role. Sadly, IRL Hess was not what you'd describe as an astute operator, so if he tries there's a good chance he gets the plotters caught instead.

Was Hess really this dunce that people are making him out to be? Was he demonstrably think even compared to the other Nazis, none of whom with the possible exception of Heydrich and Speer seemed particularly bright? What is the basis of this, the 'mad' 1941 flight, or other things?

From what I've heard and read, he was impressionable, enthusiastic and a little unstable. Not exactly stupid (certainly not as dense as some of the ruling clique), even bright, but certainly not effective.

Edit: do not underestimate Goebbels' brain. The little bastard probably had more IQ points above 100 on his own that rest of the cabinet combined.
