Inspired by a recent thread asking if the Spanish Match had gone through, I read a bit and found out that Queen Anne had proposed a Spanish Match for her eldest son Henry before his death in 1612. But from then until her death she flip-flopped between a Spanish match and a French match for Charles.
This got me wondering how things might change if Henry Stuart had become king instead of Charles. He is described as being an "obdurate Protestant", taught by Calvinist-influenced clerics. As for a Spanish Match, everyone was against it except King James. Maria Anna wouldn't accept it, and Pope Paul V would never have granted the necessary dispensation.
Marriage candidates I can think of for either Henry of Charles would be:
1. Elizabeth of Hesse-Kassel (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_of_Hesse-Kassel,_Duchess_of_Mecklenburg).
2. Catherine of Brandenburg (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_of_Brandenburg).
3. Maria Elizabeth of Sweden (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Maria_Elizabeth_of_Sweden).
4. Any of Henry IV of France's daughters (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_IV_of_France#Marriages_and_legitimate_children).
5. Any of Frederick IV, Elector Palatine's daughters (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_IV,_Elector_Palatine#Family_and_children).
And yes, I have read the most well-known TL on the subject here (
https://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=63707), but it's not perfect. Chief among them was Henry marrying Henrietta Maria of France, both staunchly religious in opposite spectrums.
Any thoughts, especially on what Henry might be like as a king?
EDIT: I put forward Maria Eleanora of Brandenburg, when I originally meant to put down her sister.
