WI: Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales Lived

Henry Frederick lived to ascend the throne as Henry IX:

Who would he have married?

Would the First or Second English civil wars of happened?

What would the British monarchy look like today?

If the civil wars didn't happen would the monarchy still exist today?

Any other butterflies this would cause?

As I understand, he was very strongly committed to the Protestant cause in Europe. This probably would have meant far greater English/Scottish involvement in the Thirty Years' War.

I wonder how far British (English/Scottish) finances would have permitted that. Even if we assume Parliament supports him, this is not a very strong base to draw on for taxation compared to a century later.

Or any British support really. I mean did England ever send much support to the Protestants during the thirty years war?

your right, Britain didn't become a financial powerhouse until the 1700s so I wonder if the British economy would have been able to sustain such an intervention, which we can assume would be fairly longstanding. Would there be a possibility of a second Spanish Armada? Another interesting question would be will there still be an English civil war? After all the war came about because of Charles I's policies, so would Henry IX be another Charles or would he take a more delicate approach to Parliament? Then there's the question of what Henry's policy to France will be? Would he still attempt to intervene in favor of the Huguenots, like Charles I? Would England and France be able to fight on the same side against the Habsburgs? Next would be what gains England would make in the war. Territory in the Spanish Netherlands? New colonies? Trade rights? And finally would such an intervention lead to an earlier rise of England in continental politics?

Would England make gains in this? I doubt it. Even if it can sustain years of large scale fighting, that doesn't mean it'd be in a position to demand anything in Europe.

That's what I was thinking in all honesty. I mean the only parts of the war they could realistically get involved in would be the eighty years war/dutch front and maybe North Germany, helping out Sweden. Maybe they could try for Dunkirk as some sort of replacement Calais, but that might become a cash drain for the Crown. I wonder if Henry would still start the War with France in the '20s, and if so, if he would continue the war longer then Charles I. Then there's the question of a bride. I wonder if Henrietta Maria would end up as Henry's Queen or not? Or would Henry try for a Protestant match, either from Scandinavia or Germany.
