WI: Henry FitzRoy lives

there's a thought, the Kingdom of Ireland a free country with it's own king:D

Don't get me started on the Americans' bizarre definition of "free" but, while this Ireland would have been united and independent, it would have basically been a puppet of England.

Though that might change if Henry VIII still breaks with Rome.

only said it to piss you off ;)

by the time of POD he already had, and if he wants his Bastard to be king he'll have to stay split from Rome

Oh yes, of course, you're right.

Ireland might break with England if Henry still has a son (i.e. the future Edward VI) and then Henry wants him to inherit Ireland as well as England. OTL, Henry VIII planned to make Henry FitzRoy king of Ireland as a test-bed to see if he would be accepted as king of England if Henry VIII never had any legitimate sons. But then when he did get Edward VI, Henry FitzRoy died - some people say he was bumped off by Henry VIII.

So, let's say he becomes King of Ireland, then Edward VI (or his analogue) is born, then Henry VIII says FitzRoy has to step down...and he refuses. Obviously Ireland at this point was not in a very good position to fight off an English invasion alone, but Henry VIII had some powerful enemies on the Continent who might back FitzRoy. Could be quite interesting.

Evidently "some people" are talking bollocks, then :D

There was a history of unexplained illnesses in the family.

So this looks like a good POD.

i'd imagine that given how sickly the Tours were that the butterflies would kill off "Edward VI" or make him a her :D in fact if FitzRoy never got consumption would Henry VIII even marry Jane Seymour? (he married her on May 30, 1536, 18 days before FitzRoy died)

I think Henry would have married her anyway, he seemed to be genuinely in love (of course, he was with Anne Boleyn as well at the time, and look what happened to her ;) )

This idea has come up before and I think it was generally decided that Henry VIII's grasp of recent (War of the Roses) history would keep him from legitimizing royal bastards (check the Tudor's basis for claiming the crown and it all becomes clear).

If however Henry FitzRoy were to have a (legitimate) son, then things could go sideways. Henry VIII's overwhelming desire to continue his dynasty would start rubbing against issues of legitimacy. Imagine his quandary, a sickly though legitimate Prince Edward, and a healthy though illegitimatly descended FitzRoy. Then you add that into a mixture which already has the legally bastardized Mary and Elizabeth and Tudor family politics enters a heretofore unimagined level of complexity. Oh my. This could be mind-bendingly fun.
