WI Hedy Lamarr's invention was adopted

FTWDK, Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil invented an early form of frequency hopping, and presented it to the US Navy; they were rebuffed, though a similar device was used two decades later during the Cuban missile crisis.

So what if the Navy had adopted this invention for use in torpedoes during WWII? Would it have worked; would it have come in handy for the allies at any point during the war effort, and if so, how would the war be affected? And what about the implications of a world famous actress' engineering feat actually getting any recognition? (And yes, I've been reading Cracked -- sue me.)

CONSOLIDATE: Oh, and almost forgot -- do we see any civilian technology move up post-war? Maybe earlier WiFi?

Also, not of the OP but speaking of Hedy Lamarr "what if"s, seems she was considered for Bergman's role in Casablanca...

Another Cracked reader I see, well the article you linked stated that the tech was quite there. I could however see this possibly get prototyped (if taken seriously) by the end of 1945. Crude, but it could work. non the less we might have problems with simple radio operation(water depth and distance work well together, just not in your favor) and control(Glide bombs are already hard to see even with a flashing light or smoke trail)

So what circumstances would they most come in handy, if at all?

For the US Navy? Hmmmm, perhaps a specialized flying bomb. I was thinking maybe a psudo trunked radio system(Idk what I was thinking) but the tech isn't there. I'd hate to shoot down a interesting idea, just wait abit someone more knowledgeable probably on their way.

An interesting missed chance. Unfortunately I don't know enough about the technology. Nevertheless it deserves to be discussed a little more.
