WI Harvey Milk not murdered?

Perhaps time as Mayor of San Francisco, but I honestly can't see him getting any further than that in politics.

However, if given more time on earth, we might see him at the head of a broader, more unified and more organized gay rights movement.

It seems to me he'd face off against Feinstein in the Dem primary, who was Moscone's 2IC and was part of the Council's centrist bloc in opposition to Moscone.

I would like to add that Milk was a figure people could rally around; the man almost singlehandedly prevented a riot after the Dade County civil rights ordinance was overturned, instead turning the crowd into a unified protest march. The man could have been an influential leader for civil rights.

He apparently was a very committed follower of Jim Jones, so there's a real possibility he goes to Jonestown and drinks the Kool-Aid. Presumably he's quite a bit less of an icon for the gay community.

Where's your source on this? IIRC, Jones was powerful in San Francisco politics in the seventies because of his own ability to get out the vote. That's why everybody from Milk to Moscone to Jimmy Carter was on alright terms with Mr. Jones.

I think that they were already dead before Milk was killed, weren't they?

Though not gay, I grew up in SF and remember Milk.

He was part of the big democratic machine in SF during the 70s, after the takeover by Moscone and his fellow liberals. As someone else said, Jones was politically connected, raised lots of money and knew everyone. Milk was no more connected to him than anyone else.

Harvey deserved better than he got, for sure. But he became an icon after his death and missed the gay community's suffering during the early years of AIDS.

Doubt he could have gone far in statewide, let alone national politics, but its always one of those things we in SF will wonder about.

um many people thought that the Milk-Moscone murder was a People's Temple hit.

Although his death was wrong, and should not have happened, he is somewhat of a martyr in the Gay Community (I'm an active member in some LGBT activities)

Legislatively speaking, it's pretty hard to say. I can see Milk taking up advocacy for full gay civil rights and government accountability. Perhaps he would be a touring lobbyist going from state to state working to get public support for civil rights referendums, as well as increasing government responsibility for their constituents. It's easy to forget, but he wasn't a single-issue politician.

Summation: he works as a lobbyist or figurehead for the issues that concerns him, raising public awareness and encouraging people to vote.

I hope that helps some, Rogue.

He would have lived out his life as a prominent local politician. Well known in the Bay area and among homosexual rights groups, but not nationally.

Since he was promiscuous, and IIRC a supporter of bath houses, he may well have been an early AIDS casualty.

Weirdly enough one small butterfly is that if robocop end up being made its a different movie because the councilman making take the city hall hostage based on Dan White crime

BA: How does his survival affect the gay movement's legislative agenda?

hard to say, at the end of the Prop 6 fight Milk was a major national name, he and Feinstein didn't like each other, Feinstein had an odd objection to Leather Daddies, so was always Lukewarm on gay rights, so I think Milk would of run against her for Mayor, he wasn't a big winner but he an Moscone ally and the gays where much more organized, any ways the Cops were gunning for Milk and Moscone......
