WI Guy Fawkes succeeds?

Who knows? Maybe Fawkes' plan would work, and from the resulting anarchy a Catholic regime would form. Or maybe a protestant regime that was even more harsh on the Catholics. It's really something of a crapshoot.

Protestants staying in power strikes me as much more likely; unless my English/British history professors were wrong, by the time of the Gunpowder Plot there were not enough Catholics left in Britain to make a takeover feasible without substantial foreign support.

That's not to mention that I doubt you would see a collapse into anarchy in the first place; more likely, there would just be a regency for Charles I, who will probably be rather significantly changed from his OTL persona in some ways.

Well, I can tell you that from a reenactment I've seen, Westminster Hall would have been entirely destroyed, killing James, most of the Lords (including several powerful catholics), most of the Bishops, the 2 Archbishops, lots of wealthy merchants, the MPs of the Commons and probably some people outside due to chimneys collapsing etc.

Afterwards, the plan was a Catholic regency for Princess Henrietta. Very unlikely to work as the moderate Catholics (not being overly persecuted thanks to Elizabeth) would view themselves as loyal to the King above the plotters, so they'd have very little support. Probably more Catholic emmigration to the Americas, less Puritans go. Perhaps the initial demograpics of Massachussetts and Maryland end up swapped.

There have been 2 recent threads on this, so you might want to look for those to get some ideas.

If a Protestant regime is set up, you're going to see a lot of Catholics leaving England if there are any left that is.

Remarkable...

...I'm in agreement with Sa'id Mohammed!!!

The reconstruction looked at this question and predicted a pogrom against Catholics. A 'Puritan Backlash' that would eliminate the majority of Catholics, a bit like a St. Bartholomew's Eve in reverse.

We might see the English Civil War replaced by a foreign anti-Roman-Catholic war. England and Scotland might be more Presbyterian and Calvinist, which would be very bad news for Ireland. Unless Charles and his successors can prevent it, the Irish Catholic might be extinct. You might see France attempting to mount a Crusade - Spain is probably worn out by its own troubles - but an English/Scots Army with military experience would not be an easy foe to overcome.

The butterflies are literally vast.

Odds are Charles is going to be on the Protestant side in this TL; having his father murdered by a Catholic plot when he's at a formative age seems like the kind of thing could turn him against the Catholics in a big way. Butterflies could end up turning the Stuarts into staunchly protestant monarchs, which would have all kinds of interesting effects; there's a fair chance they could even hold onto the throne.

They could end up eventually being a very staunchly Protestant nation, even moreso than the German states, right?

Especially if they remain in power up to the Enlightenment...
