German Forces invaded Greece on 6 April 1941, the Germans initially attacked the Metaxas Line but they were unable to go through it because of the heavy resistance they encountered, so they decided to outflank the Line by moving troops to Greece through the Greek-Yugoslav border which was poorly defended. German forces surrounded the Metaxas Line but the soldiers continued to resist the waves of attacks. The XXX Infantry Corps on the left wing reached its designated objective on the evening of April 8, when the 164th Infantry Division captured Xanthi. The 50th Infantry Division advanced far beyond Komotini towards the Nestos river, which both divisions reached on the next day. On April 9, the Greek II Army Corps capitulated unconditionally following the collapse of Greek resistance east of the Axios river.
WI the II Army Corps didnt capitulated and attempted a "desperate" breakthrough in Axios river towards Thessaloniki? They could join the remaining Greek Army then with the British in Kozani and make their stand there while III Army Corps and Epirus Army were busy kicking Italians out of Albania... How is this altering History? Any thoughts?
