WI: Grant wins the 1880 Republican nomination?

What it says on the tin. What if Grant won the Republican nomination for president in 1880? How well would he do and if he won what would he do in office?

IMPOSSIBLE. Too much corruption and scandals surrounding him and his previous offices.

If he won the Republican nomination (because ASB had rigged the election), it would have pushed Democratic 1876 Nominee Samuel J. Tilden to re-stand and win all out this time.

I wouldn't say its ASB for him to win the nomination. He was withing 60 votes or so IIRC from getting the nomination OTL.

Grant, despite the many problems that his administration accumulated, was still pretty popular with the Republican rank and file. I dare say he was still popular with the public at large and could win 1880. Not to deny the man his credit, but Garfield was in essence a political nobody to the average American, and he still beat a War Hero! Sadly I don't think Grant could undo the end of Reconstruction, but I think he'd at least try something (which would be strangled to death by the Congressional Democrats).

Grant won the 1868 and 1872 by being the war hero. By 1874, the poor economy and numerous political scandals was hitting Grant hard, also it was still unconventional to have a third term President, with no special reason, (such as WW2 with FDR) i can see them electing him to a third.

Yes he is still only 58, but Henry Wilson was only 63 when he died as Vice President. Also his tour around the world since 1876 has taken its toll on his finance, so could look a bit weird that he wants to return to the white house now he has not money.
