WI Grant Stillborn

What would have been the progression of the Civil War if Ulysses Grant had been stillborn? Would the war have dragged on longer until the Union was able to find a competent general, or was the CSA on its last feasible legs by the time Grant took command?

Who would have replaced Grant? Sherman, maybe, although IIRC he wasn't that good of a strategic commander.

The ACW would still carry on, although granted the western theatre may not be as successful for the Union as the OTL - especially the eventual Union victory in the Vicksburg campaign.

The eastern theatre, meanwhile, maybe even more successful as Meade was just as good as Grant, in many respects, but not as ruthless. So expect a completely different battle history in the east as Meade would not have conducted the Union offensives in 1864-65 in the same manner as Grant.

BTW you've got Sherman wrong. He was far better at strategy than tactics. His March to the Sea offensive clearly indicates his brilliant strategic thinking, whilst his attack at Kennesaw Mountain, not to mention his performance earlier at Shiloh, betrays his rather average tactical abilities. In this manner he is similar to Grant.
