Skip wins two terms, and derails the Obama campaign in 2008 when he wins the Iowa Caucuses in a state where he was said by critics to have "lived" the last two years. Humphrey then goes on to win the presidency.

At Paul Wellstone's funeral the crowd welcomes Governor Humphrey and Walter Mondale wins the 2002 Senate election. In 2003, Vice President Cheney casts the tie breaking vote to give Republicans control of the 50 50 Senate. In 2008, does 80 year old Senator Mondale retire. If so does he endorse a candidate who is not Al Franken?

I was curious if anyone else would see this as a possibility. Humphrey's famous name puts him automatically in the possible candidates list for the future, even if he isn't initially interested himself.

I could see Mondale choosing to stick around until he died this time - alternatively, his son Ted could enter into it, as he did for Governor against Humphrey.
