WI: Governor John Lindsay

I've had the opinion that had Nelson Rockefeller won a presidential election or been nominated for the vice presidency or a cabinet post, that John Lindsay could have run for Governor of New York. What if that happened?

Some matters to consider for Rockefeller's OTL era of governance: the harsh Rockefeller drug laws, the government infrastructure build up in New York, the loss of population from New York State to other states, and dealing with Upstate unemployment issues via creating jobs in the prison system.

It Would probably have to be before he became mayor of NYC. If he ran in 1970 or 1974 he would have burnt too many bridges by that point due to his time as mayor. Keep in mind that not all of those bridges were destroyed on purpose, its just the effect of being Mayor in a City going through the chronic issue New York Faced in the 1960s.

One possibility would be Lindsay going straight from congress to the Governor's mansion in the early 1960s, perhaps due to a vacancy of Governor Rockefeller becoming President or Vice President.

Lindsay was a disaster as mayor, I doubt he could have won.

If he ran for Governor instead of Mayor though, it is likely he could have won it with the support of the Liberal and Republican parties. His charm and charisma would have been a wining element without the baggage of his time as Mayor

He would be such a terrible governor...

Wouldn't almost anyone, say, from '65 to the crisis in '75 have real difficulties as the mayor of NYC?

And in spite of what people might think about federal money rolling into the city, isn't it the case that New York City pays out more in net federal dollars (primarily income tax of residents) than it receives? And this can be seen if you look at a post office in a small town in Nebraska which is likely to be nice, new, modern, and well staffed and compare it with a New York City post office which is likely to be older and crowded.

Possibly, but my concept really is John Lindsay running for governor because Nelson Rockefeller won the presidency in '60, '64 or '68, or was vice president or appointed to be a cabinet member during those years. Depending on the year, that would be earlier in his term as mayor.
