WI: Gore runs in '08

Gingrich thread reminded me to ask this.

What if the "Draft Gore" movement is successful, and Gore runs for President in 2008. Does he win the Democratic nomination? Who is his running mate? How would he fair against the possible Republican nominees (Don't automatically assume it's McCain...this may be for a timeline ;)).

Obama doesn't run if Gore does, per Game Change. So you get an epic grudge match with Hillary where despite her liberal record, the moderate/DLC wing of the party throws in with her as per OTL while the left behind Gore. Establishment fractures badly. Tossup, though Hillary did lead Gore in national trial heats IIRC.

Republican nominee: If not McCain, then Romney since Huckabee doesn't have the resources to go all the way.

I'm planning to have the nominee for the GOP someone different (Don't worry it's not Paul...not yet anyways) but someone unexpected.

Would Gore pick Clinton as his VP or would he double up with a southerner like Slick Willie did in '92?

Mind you that Republicans don't go with someone different and unexpected for their presidential nominees.

Let's just say Gore and the Clintons didn't have the best relationship from Bubba's second term onwards. Not happening. Gore could pick a Northern moderate. I'd say instead of drafting Jeanne Shaheen for a rematch with Sununu, pick her as Gore's running mate instead. She was vetted in '00 and '04 but declined.

I know. But this is supposed to be a chaotic election of sorts, and that's where the chaos needs to begin.

Northern moderate sounds good, I'll looke for a more... interesting choice considering the circumstances of the election.

Gore did not get along with the Clintons? I thought they were still on good terms?

What about a conservative Democrat, maybe Sen. Ben Nelson from Nebraska? Another choice could be a minority candidate or a woman... Maybe Obama?

I don't see how this effects Republicans. I think frontrunner McCain still wins the nomination.

Both Gore and Obama are intellectual liberals by 2008. Heck no.

I'd love to see him pick Lieberman and storm the house saying "we're coming back for what we've deserved".

An interesting choice? Hmm, I see Tim Kaine being picked as a good strategy. Remember, by this time, Gore is no longer a DLC southerner. Kaine would be perfect. I agree with Mr. Beaver in that Shaheen would be an excellent choice.

Gore would win quite easily, despite a hard fought primary battle. History has shown that running again in four years doesn't help, but running again in 8 years does. See Nixon.

As interesting as it would be to see him pick Lieberman, by 2008 he is solidly the pariah in the Democratic party that he is today. It's... doubtful.
