WI: Goldsboro, NC destroyed by atomic bombs?

In January of 1961, a US Air Force bomber carrying two nuclear bombs broke apart over eastern North Carolina. The bombs were dangerously close to detonating, but luckily did not. But what would happen if the nuclear bombs had detonated? What kind of an effect would this have?

We've been through this.

About 16,000 people would have died. Sadly, Jesse Helms isn't one of them. It would be a huge embarrassment for the US and great news for the USSR. Nuclear testing would be restricted and the SAC would be disbanded. Beyond that, though, I'm not sure.
