WI: Godzilla '98 sequel

Script Treatment for "Godzilla 2"

While the '98 remake of the classic monster flick was a profitable blockbuster, it didn't meet high studio expectations and while a sequel remained in planning, the idea ultimately fell out of favor within a year or two of release. Despite the unpopularity of the initial film and it's many issues, the second takes a step closer to the original mythos.

So let's say the studios go forward with a sequel at least vaguely based on this treatment... is it successful? What's changed? What isn't? Are there more monster flicks? Even less? Does Toho still jump forward with more Japanese films?

Does Emmerich direct the second? If so, it'll have the same forgettable stock characters.

A problem with the original Godzilla is that the monster was constantly obscured by shadows and lighting. Make him more visible, and the film might be more enjoyable.

I'm not sure if Emmerich would come back, but based on the script treatment, it'd have the same issues without a rehaul. I remember early on taking issue with the idea of pushing aside Audrey. I wasn't a huge fan of the romance plot, but it felt silly to push aside one of the two main protagonists of the original film so carelessly.

After reading the treatment to the sequel script, I don't think this movie would have improved on the first one. Americans don't take well to monster movies and it just being about Godzilla fighting a giant queen bee on a tropical island doesn't improve the story. I don't think it would have been as successful as the first one. The animated series was much better than either of these scripts.

I saw bits of the Godzilla in NewYork film on tv once, and thought that it was pretty darn bad. It didnt seem to be a Godzilla movie at all, really. Of course its been years, and i may be misrembering, but it felt more like a 'SciFi original' than a theatre movie.

Given that sequels ate usually worse than the originals....

Gotta make Godzilla bigger, and accept that he really does have nuclear fire breath, then we've got a movie.

Yeah, no Audrey, and someone a little more heroic in the lead, not Ferris. How about Denzel!? I'd totally watch that.

The animated series worked because it was basically the original movies condensed to 30-minutes.

Godzilla '98 is still better than Godzilla vs. Megalon, for my money.
