One of the most common factors attributed to the Great Recession was the housing crisis that slowly built up over the course of ten years from 1998-2008 approximately. The repealing of the Glass-Steagal act, which regulated the actions of commercial banking, is usually considered to be the catalyst for this downward spiral.
