WI: Germany retains Austria following WW2

Lets assume a slightly less horrific Nazi regime, a less successful Nazi Babarossa and a quicker German surrender. The Allies, scared of the Soviets, extend the American occupation zone of Germany to include the state of Austria.

How does this affect the development of West Germany? What are the Soviet responses? How does German reunification play out? And what does a post USSR world with this alternate Germany/Germanies look like (If unification doesn’t happen)

I could see, in theory an allied victory in which Germany keeps Posen and Silesia, possibly even East-Prussia. I do not see a way in which Nazi-Germany loses the war and manages to keep any part that was not part of Germany before the Nazis came to power.

The only thing that I can see happening is some sort of compromise peace when Germany is not defeated, but it is clear it can't win the war either. But you need a very different war for that to happen. Actualy you need a very different lead up to the war for that to happen. After Munich noone is going to trust the nazi's enough for a compromise peace.

There is no chance that the Western Allies will let West Germany keep any part of Austria--unless Stalin makes a separate state out of his occupation zone od Austria (which he is not likely to do, in part precisely because of the fear that this would be the result). Even then I think they would prefer a West Austrian republic.

Farmers and cow heards. That's what you find in Wesern Austria at the time, everything important is in the East.

I could see the Western part ending up in Germany because everything else is just not viable, and when German reunification happsens the Eastern part is added as well.

Nevertheless, the Western Allies would not like to look like they are validating one of Hitler's conquests. The whole issue is academic in any event because Stalin pretty clearly did not intend to Sovietize his zone of Austria.
