WI George Wallace Independent 1972 Run

FWIR, when Nixon sought re-election, he wanted Wallace to run in the democratic primaries, which happened otl; suppose it didn't? How would the 1972 election (both Dem primaries and General) be altered if Wallace again ran as a third party candidate, and wasn't injured in an assassination attempt? How, in turn, does this affect Nixon's political strategy and administration? And how do these changes alter US history?

Unless Muskie or Humphrey get the Democratic nomination, Nixon still wins and wins rather comfortably.

Wallace might be able to win some southern states, and he might throw a few more states to McGovern, but I think Nixon still wins in a landslide.

The Democrats who switched to Nixon were of two groups. White Southerners who had yet to make the switch (this group would not fully come over in my view until W. in 2000, based on Bubba's success), and blue collar Northern Union Democrats disgusted with the identity politics and social views of the New Left.

Wallace takes the first from him (remember that Wallace's attacks on Nixon in the Democratic Primary in 1972 were very successful for him), but the second group, outside of a few in areas like South Boston, Milwaukee, Detroit (wherever racial tensions were insanely high), would go to Nixon still.

If Nixon never gets the segregationist voters to cross over to the GOP in either of his campaigns, what kind of effect does this have on subsequent Presidential elections? Or on the subsequent political strategy of the GOP overall?

Wallace wins Mississippi and Alabama. Nixon still wins.

Remember the south still voted democrat in 1976. Even the closet states Reagan won in 1980 were the southern states. Even in the 90s could a conservative southern democrat win the south.

It wasn't until 2000, when Al Gore lost his home state of Tennessee, West Virgina, and Arkansas (after 8 successful Clinton years) was the south firmly GOP
