WI: George W. Bush loses 2000

I did not title this "Gore Wins" because this simply isn't about Gore's fate. The question is what becomes of George Bush. Does he continue serving as Governor of Texas? Does he go back to the private sector? Does he try to make another bid? How does the GOP remember him? Etc. etc.

Bush could probably make a 2004 bid. Rematch of Bush vs Gore, a la Eisenhower vs Stevenson? He might go back to Texas, he was pretty darn popular there.

The GOP'll probably remember him somewhat like his dad. Could've done some good, but the economy/evil Democrats/Floridans stole the election from him.

Did he wait until winning to resign as Governor? I can see him just carrying on down there if so.

Yes, he did. Had he lost, he would have kept going as Governor of Texas and almost certainly would have been reelected in 2002. Strange as it sounds in retrospect, Bush had a reasonable amount of support among vote-splitting Texas Democrats while he was governor. I am personally skeptical that he would have run again for President.

That assumes that he'd run again- or that he'd not get questioned about the Eliza May case.

if bush stays on as governor when will rick Perry become governor

No guarentee. Lt. Gov. is rather powerless position. He'd have to win it outright on his own accord and Perry has never been the most popular in GOP Texas circles until he happened into the role when Bush left office.

He'd likely have multiple challengers for the party's nomination and may not get it.

Is it perhaps a bit more likely that Bush would sit it out in 2004 and run in 2008 as an "I told you so, electorate!" candidate against the Democrats? I'm guessing that if they've been in the White House for sixteen years by this point, the Democratic brand will have become fairly toxic...

Bush wouldn't run in 2004, and the GOP Party wouldn't have picked him. The runner up in the 2000 primaries would have his turn and lose.

Four consecutive terms for the Democrats, you say?

The runner up in 2000 was McCain, not that that proves it one way or another.
