WI George Romney was Republican nominee in 1968

I read somewhere that a reporter joked putting in a button on his typewriter that would type "Romney later clarified his remarks..." or something to that effect. He seemed to be competent, but lack a politician's touch... his "brainwashing" comment was at the end of a long day, off the cuff remark, and might not have even been related to the conversation. But I would take Plumber, Magniac, or RogueBeaver (among others) opinions over mine.

It depends. Romney is wonderful on paper:
The All American Optimist, like Bobby Kennedy, able to bring people to his side based on that like Bobby Kennedy.
A Moderate Liberal Republican who is not the embodiment of the Establishment like Nelson Rockefeller.
A man who can get the black vote.
A profitable and successful business man, which is always good for a Republican.

This is a man John Kennedy said was the one person he was really worried of running against.

Off paper is another story. Romney's greatest issues are that he is a gaffer like Bush Jr and has trouble giving speeches, he opens himself to claims of non-natural citizenship (and conspiracies related to it) like Obama, and his candidacy relies on Nelson Rockefeller not being greedy for the nomination himself. That's why Romney exited the race according to Romney: not the brainwashing comment, but that Nelson Rockefeller, who previously said he was not going to run and endorsed George Romney, entered the race, and Romney could not stand up to both Rockefeller and Nixon.
Then again, George Bush did manage to win 2000 after eight years of a popular Democrat despite his mouth doing what it did. If Romney doesn't gaffe too badly, I think he has a chance. I don't think the "George is a Mexican" thing will come up too strongly outside the Right wing and John Birchers. The big issue is to keep Nelson Rockefeller from changing his mind and running himself.
