WI: George Lucas Dies While Making Episode I

What if director/producer George Lucas suffered a fatal heart attack in the late 1990s while in the pre-production of Episode I: The Phantom Menace?

Spielberg would've done it. I think it was an agreement they had.

Not sure how it would've affected the casting or story, though.

Spielberg would have made it... Spielbergian (obviously). Whilst Lucas had pretty much made a lot of stuff on the fly, he had a rough, rough outline, so Spielberg would have used that, and the story would adapt. A lot more of the boring stuff would be cut, though the story would be kept roughly the same to honor Lucas. Jar Jar would still be there, but I'd like to think that Spielberg would actually have made him likable.Casting wise, if Jake Loyd was still cast, Spielberg would have demanded more of a performance. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor would have been more dynamic in character so Liam's death meant something, and it'll be more streamlined to remove the meander. Basically Episode I but edited. Spielberg will stay on as Producer, but is unlikely to direct Episode II. He'll make the Clone Wars a war against Clones (Droids were ineffective on Naboo, so Clones are the next step), and give Anakin more of an arc for Episodes II and III. More practice stuff as well. Spielberg was more hands on than Lucas, and preferred filming on a physical set. We'll get a higher quality of work, however the Clone Wars Trilogy will be a Far different beast.

:(

We truly are living in a dystopia aren't we? It's possible that butterflies would have resulted in 9/11 being prevented too. Damn it, George Lucas.

Wow, you really think so, don't you? However the idea that the Prequel Trilogy caused all the bad things in the 21st century to happen is ridiculous. IMO that idea floating on the internet is pretty much imo the Sealion of popular culture and has some really disturbing tones resembling stab-in-the-back too(the Jews/Lucas screwed over "the great" Germany/SW and the world sucks as a result of it).....

If anything, considering how people have tried to use SW to justify their allegories. In fact a even worse 9/11 or a even harsher US response in the War on terror(President Cheney cuz Bush dies, even worse Patriot Act, 7 countries in 5 years implemented in the timeframe it is implamented in, or all three of these) the Prequels might get significant cult following the more critical one is to the US and they will let Lucas off the hook because of rampant Anti-Americanism or Palpatine=US government allegories that people who would criticize these actions would make(the SW fandom might even become a haven for conspiracy theorists and truthers).

Back to the topic at hand, if it is Spielburg, Episode I will be better, but depending on who directs the other ones, they might be better or worse. Clone Wars might be both sides use Clones, Jar Jar's personality will most likely be like his personality in the Clone Wars tv series. Anakin will be aged up to same age as Amidala in episode I(no Jake Lloyd).

If Prequels are better due to the directions the next two films take, the post-ROTJ EU might be regarded more highly and any TCW-era EU will not be regarded as highly as TCW did in OTL. Maybe people's lack of intrest in the Post-ROTJ EU is because they wanted more from the Prequels, or something "redeeming" or "justifying" it's existence given the myriad problems of the films--and The Clone Wars 2008 fulfilled that demand. KOTOR will still exist either way.

If the Prequels were better made, CGI will also probably be more highly regarded imo.

What are you on about? I wasn't being particularly serious, and I don't understand why you're equivalencing dislike of Lucas=anti-semitism, when he's proven himself to be a mediocre director at best.

I'm also not a rabid SW fanboy, never read the EU, and I don't see SW fans as being anything other than nerds that like SW. It's always been a relatively simplistic good vs evil story mixed with Heroes Journey and I doubt Spielberg would change that (except doing it better obviously).

I wasn't talking about you I was talking about this post here(which seems to have started the idea). And it isn't criticism of Lucas but the idea that because the Prequels were bad the whole world sucks for it, which imo is pretty ASB as it ignores a lot of historical, social and economic factors why things actually happen. Also I will say that within this context the LOTR movies were epic yet the butterflies from that never shifted our society in any way.

Sorry if I offended you in any way, but the writer of that is dead serious.
