Alright here's an interesting, if somewhat obscure POD...
Let's say that the assassination attempt on George I of Greece that happened in OTL on February 14th 1898 is successful. I haven't been able to find the exact details of the attempt but bear with me but I don't think it's too much of a stretch.
Now in OTL it was George's brave response to this attempt that buoyed the Greek Monarchy and helped restore it's image after the disastrous 30 days war with Turkey in April 1897. As a result the monarchy was to emerge from the troubled times relatively unscathed all the while pinning the failure of 1897 on the politicians.
HOWEVER in TTL you have a very different situation emerging (I think...). Had the attempt succeeded George's successor would be none other than Constantine I. Now though Constantine I is known for keeping Greece out of the Great War, in 1898 he was blamed by many in the Greek military for the disastrous war of 1897. So not only would the monarchy's reputation not be buoyed by the survival of George I in TTL, but it would be further degraded by having the man many held responsible for Greece's most recent military defeat ascend to the throne.
Now I don't see Constantine as being one to kowtow to the reformers so I think that this additional "push" factor could be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back in TTL's Greece. OTL Greek History surrounding the turn of the century was particularly tumultuous with a considerable amount of violence and unrest. Add into this a deeply unpopular monarch and I think you might just have the recipe for an earlier 2nd Hellenic Republic.
Thoughts?
