WI: George HW Bush is elected to the Senate in 1970. How does his Political Career pan Out?

What if George HW Bush defeated Lloyd Bentson (or Ralph Yarborough) in the 1970 Texas Senate race? How does this effect the trajectory of his Political Career? Does he still get elected President?

I think his defeat in 1970, and his appointment as Ambassador to the United Nations was better for his career being seen as having an experienced foreign policy. An alternative would be to have him as Gerald Ford's pick of Vice President in 72.

Corrected as Ford became President in 1974, but I think him being picked might end badly for him to as he might suffer the same fate as Rocky and be driven off the ticket in 1976 in favor of a more Conservative candidate (IRC Rumsfeld had a hand in driving Rocky off the ticket, and Rummy also had a frosty relationship with HW Bush as well).

Oh alternatively, Nixon picks Bush as VP instead of Ford. He wanted Connaly OTL but Democratic leadership said it was Ford or bust. Nixon liked Bush a lot so maybe Bush might seen as moderate enough for Carl Albert?

Bush would still become President in this scenario, the question then would be is Bush be able to fend off Reagan (or alternatively have an easier time doing so than Ford in OTL) and win the General in 1976?
