WI: George H.W. Bush picks Alan Keyes as his VP

This may be a bit of a long shot...but Keyes, an ambassador to the UN under the Reagan Administration was alot more popular in '88 than he is now. He even had the staunch support of President Reagan during his Maryland Senate Campagin.

So what If...Instead of going for the Dark Horse candidate of Qualye...Bush Sr. decides to team up with someone who identifies well with the GOP Conservative base...and chooses Alan Keyes during the lead up to the Republican National Convention...

How might this effect the outcome of the General Elelction? Assuming that Bush wins as in OTL...How might Keyes do as VP under the Bush administration? What are some other effects that might take place with the swap of choice?

Keyes was NOT the ambassador to the UN, no matter what clever wordplay he tries to use to get people to think otherwise. Keyes merely worked at a staffer for the American delegation at the UN. The Ambassadors to the UN during Reagan's term were Jeane Kilpatrick and Vernon Walters.

I think voters would get scared of Keyes, who is rather radical. That might just have changed the election result and would certainly have made it closer.

Bush had the religious wing of the republicans locked up. It would be a stupid pick that would do nothing but scare moderates.

Keyes would certainly been a contender for the nomination in 96.

Considering how badly he ran for that congressional seat I find it likely he would bomb, but in this senerio he would probably have a much better team, so ...

Maybe he gets the nomination.

Black religious Conservative vs Clinton?

Depends how well managed he is.
