WI: George Bush killed 10 May 2005

I had forgotten the role of Saakashvili in the invasion of South Ossetia. This could keep things more normal. Of course, if Cheney recognizes Kosovo, Russia might recognize South Ossetia or Abkhazia anyway...

I doubt this would affect the USA's traditionally outspoken role with regards to Kosovo, we basically made Kosovo, public sentiment towards supporting the Kosovars was baically 101.2% by the time Cheney was president.

Russia recognizing South Ossetia and Abkhazia probably didn't have too much to do with that though, it was more just to twist the sword in Georgia's gut and remind them that if they ever champed at the bit like that again that old Mother Russia was going to come down on them like a ton of bricks.

This is in my to do list for a potential TL. I keep wondering if the TL is too soon.

Bush dies, and his legacy is that of a Republican version of JFK - a man who, faults aside, did what he felt was best for the nation, and elad us through some dark times. The Bush family becomes the Republican equivilent of the Kennedies - in my potential TL, Jeb Bush wins a landslide election in 2012.

Cheyney gets LBJ syndrome and gets it hard - maybe a few more of the things Bush pushed for get passed intially like Entitlement reform and a few other things, but the honeymoon period won't even last a year. The Republican Congressional scandals, Katrina, Abramov, the worst of the Iraqi insurgency will hit soon and hit hard, and unlike Dubya, he won't have Bush's 5 good years. He and the GOP will get raked over the coals and the country will suffer for it.

The Cheyney Presidency will look a lot like Bush's last three years, but in two major areas - gay rights and whomever he picks as VP. I had him pick Colin Powell personally, but whomever he picks will have an enormous impact on the GOP and the nation.

The Dems will clean up in 06 and 08 far more than OTL, but I don't see Obama getting the nomination. In 08, expect President Clinton - or if you want to go grimdark, President Edwards.

Pop Culture will also be effected, mostly for the better. There will be no glut of anti-Bush media (propaganda by any other name), and a lot of loud anti-Bush critics will get silenced or get smashed - think Dixie Chicks on steroids - think Green Day getting blacklisted, or for the V for Vendetta movie flopping. It will make pop culture a lot less political, which will be an inprovement in the long run I would think.

Overseas, we may see a bigger puch to get Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.

How does that sound?

I would read the TL... It sounds really interesting but I doubt Jeb would be the nominee in 2012 but George P Bush for Texas Governor in 2012 is doable

I could see Jeb in the above scenario. He'd be viewed as the guy ready to bring the GOP back to the good ole' days.

I could see the Bush name being just as influential in Texas as the Kennedy name is in Massachusetts, which would certainly be interesting

I think Cheney would still recognize Kosovo, he struck me as enough of a hawk to do it. Russia would probably recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia in response to that. That would probably result in mutual name-calling at the UN and not much else.

Though with less tension, the recognitions could be a bit broader. (Though many European powers wouldn't recognize any of them, due to the message it mights send places like Corsica, Basque Country, Scotland, etc.)

I think in 2008, Cheney loses by a larger margin then McCain did. I think although he was the Republican crown prince, McCain is too old to run in 2012. So the 2012 election goes as it did OTL.

With his health problem I could see him passing on another term, but I am remembering what Henry Kissinger told Gerald Ford: to be taken seriously you need to seek another term.

Cheney didn't want the Presidency and had anyone but Dubya asked him to run for Vice President in 2000 he would've said no - he had hoped to retire from the candidate/politician side of politics and just be an adviser.

I would read it. I think it would be pretty cool, as I feel like this isn't a very well known POD.

Yeah. Given the position most African nations tend to take towards secessionists, I imagine they wouldn't be too thrilled either. Maybe more of Latin America looking to stick it to Cheney?
