I’m an English born Canadian. You can call me limey, tommy, pom, roast beef, Canuck, Brit, Anglo, cracker, whitey, Gweilo, etc. Never in my life have I felt that any call out of ethnicity or nationality towards myself was offensive. I can only be offended if I choose to be and I reject and denounce anyone assuming offence on my behalf. However, given that we’re so hyper sensitive today, and obliged to use today’s progressive and inclusive language and terminology when speaking of the past, I’d suggest not using “Japs” as you’re just going to get banned. Those names can easily be associated with nationality, which is not such a harshly protected identity as race is, when it comes to shorthand speak.
Speaking as someone of Polish descent, 'Pole' is the proper term for someone from Poland. 'Polack' is a derogatory slur..
Now, I’ll ignore any quotes of the above, and get back on topic. If Yamashita is dead, he can’t be sent in 1944 from China to command the defence of the Philippines. Without Yamashita’s withdrawal of his army from Manila the fighting for the city would have been much bloodier. As it was, according to Wikipedia the IJN’s 16,000 sailors massacred 100,000 Filipinos after Yamashita’s withdrawal.
