The Gast gun is a twin barrel machinegun/cannon where the recoil from one barrel loads and charges the other, allowing a much higher rate of fire than a single barrel weapon with light weight and high reliability. About the only widespread example is the Soviet GSh-23, which is in about everything that flew in the Soviet Union from 1965.
How could it be made widespread? I'm thinking it could be used instead of the 4 x 20 and 30 mm guns that were pretty much standard from the Me262/Meteor through to the F100/F8/Mig19/Hunter.
