WI: Garfield Lives, serves two full terms.

This discussion hasn't been posed in a while so I'll start a new thread.

So what would it look like if James A. Garfield got to serve two full terms? What would his administration look like? What would be it's achievements? Foreign Policy?

Also, what if he had a different Vice President? Levi P. Morton was the initial pick, but he declined. Chester A. Arthur was urged to decline too, what if he did? Who else could be a VP pick?

Suppose he tried to arrange free elections according the the US constitution in South Carolina and Mississippi

How exactly?

The peacetime US Army was way too small to police the South in any effective way. And the Northern public were fed up to their back teeth with the continual need to intervene in the South, and would have quickly turned out any administration that tried to resume it.

Garfield!?

Marvellous image of a certain notorious ginger cat lying his way into the White House and eating the President - then claiming he's Viceprex and taking control...Meow!

This a basically shitposting :pensive: Can we have a serious discussion about Garfield?

So what do you guys think about the VP thing? Who could be President in 1888?

Just Word Association...

No criticism intended. Sometimes TLs are too serious. Even mine.

Had to look hard to find President Garfield. Read his wikipedia bio and agree he might have lived given aseptic medical treatment. Interesting interests and somewhat ahead of his time. Black suffrage and the Panama Canal were matters that should have been seen to before they were.

Get writing a TL with Lister as the attending surgeon - and keep those ****** other doctors away! Let one of his old Army cronies hold off the unsuitable docs at the end of a good Navy Colt!

Some civil service reform, a slightly less anti worker federal government, the south is slightly less shitty as the redeemers probably have to be a little careful in their general attempts to turn the south into a hell hole for blacks. There maybe even precedent to stop some of the shitteir aspects of jim crow. Finally the navy is expanded much earlier so if the USA goes intervening in any conflicts in the western Hemisphere it will have a better navy.

I was hoping James G. Blaine could craft an anti-British foreign policy. It wouldn't cause a conflict in the Garfield Administration, but maybe those chickens could come to roost during the late 1890s?
