WI Gamelin is NOT replaced by Weygand? Ever!

The mistake was not in replacing Gamelin, but in replacing him too late; he had already completely lost control of the situation by the time he was relieved of command.

For the really optimum outcome the time to replace him would have been about 1933. ;)

You are correct that Weygand was a rediculous choice as his replacement.

AFAIK Gamelin had arranged a counter attack against the southern flank of the panzers but that the final order was put on hold until Weygand arrived and assessed the situation. It took Weygand 2 days to arrive from Syria and look at the map. Finally he decided to go ahead with Gamelin's original plan but by then it was too late.

Perhaps replacing Gamelin a few days later would have been more fortunate.
